A Social History of Diet Coke

6 Jul

I’m not alone! I’m an addict. I knew my new roomie and I would get along when she brought home 4 Liters of Diet Coke. Interesting read right here. Happy 28th birthday to the best friend of a beverage I have ever known. I hope those health-risk factoids I’ve read are wrong wrong wrong.

“Jeffrey Katzenberg, then chairman of Walt Disney Pictures, was rumored to drink 12 cans of Diet Coke a day. And in 1988, the secretary of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said he was considering ordering Diet Coke for the Governor’s Ball, the gala event following the Oscars.

Bill Clinton is a huge Diet Coke fan—throughout his presidency, he was photographed with a can in hand and during his grand jury testimony about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, he sat taking occasional swigs. Clinton is even reported to have placed a Diet Coke in the time capsule of his Presidential Library.

But Clinton isn’t the only power player of the ’90s to profess his love of Diet Coke. Donald Trump is also a Diet Coke devotee. Miramax big-whig Harvey Weinstein had a Diet Coke refrigerator in his limo. And designer Karl Lagerfeld is rumored to have a “Diet Coke butler,” responsible for bringing him fresh glasses of the beverage.”
