Happy 26th!

8 Apr

I’m turning 26 this Sunday, April 10th. And it feels like just yesterday we were heading to wine country in a van to celebrate 25. I think 2010 was the fastest year of my life. But then again, maybe I said the same thing in 2009. I hear it only gets faster.

Twenty-five was an age that sort of fucked with me a bit. I now understand why people call it a quarter-life crisis. I’ve still got my toes dipped in the waters of the quarterlife C but I feel like I’m ready to stop being fully immersed in it. Sometimes perfectionism, self-doubt and fear can really paralyze a gal and my few readers, it paralyzed the hell out of me at times during my 25th year. It also didn’t help that I found my first gray hairs. Mom, you lied to me about me about my genetic hair glory (my dad didn’t go gray until his 65)! And well my body wasn’t as generous to me as far as how much eating and drinking it could tolerate (San Francisco is a food and drink paradise so this could be problematic). Vanity aside, I think  25 was an important, game-changer of a year for me. While many friends moved away and sadness followed because of it, I learned to accept change a little better.  Relationships change, people change, jobs change, the weather changes…..ok I will spare you my attempts at being philosophical and poetic.

In conclusion, I am looking forward to 26 and the year ahead of me. I have a feeling it’s gonna be a good one.

This Sunday I will  be going to $1 day at Golden Gate Fields on my birthday. All those years of reading Bukowski and the Thoroughbred series and I’ve still never been to the races.

“Off to the races” is a great metaphor for years 26 through 50. A lot happens really fast. Going further, Years 50 through 75 is the “home stretch”. That’s where it thins out to those with drive, endurance and good genetics. Make it past 75 in good physical and mental health with a good family and enough cash— You had a good day at the track.
